Our team descend to the Zenobia

Divers from South London have installed a 50m-long underwater mirror at the bottom of Tooting Bec Lido as part of the pool's centenary celebrations. Members of Wandsworth BSAC were called upon to fit the 50m-long and 1m-wide 'artwork' after it was commissioned by the Lido's South London Swimming Club.

Made of acrylic sheets, the mirror lines the floor of the 91m basin at the outdoor pool. The artwork is only visible to swimmers, who can see their own reflection against the sky as they move across the surface of the pool.

Wandsworth BSAC divers Paul Barnard, John Heatly and Martin Tobias advised on fitting methods at a trial installation. The artwork was then fitted by the divers at a depth of 1.2m.

Pembroke Seal- J Heatly

At Wandsworth Divers ( BSAC club branch 1037), we like both diving and socialising.  People are busy and we think belonging to a dive club should be fun rather than a chore.  So if you like gravel pits in winter, weekly meetings in a grim pub after obligatory pool sessions and lots of lists, "procedures" and serious faces we're probably not the club for you.  On the other hand if you enjoy diving and meeting friends for a good time we might be.

We're a small mixed club (we don't want more than 30 members, otherwise getting on dives gets fractious), we have our own RIB and the only thing we take seriously is safety.  Many members now live outside London (but still belong, which says something) so we don't spend money on a pool, we use the Web and email to stay in touch, meet up now and again for a social bash - and go diving together. Owning our own RIB allows us to get safe training dives at the beginning of the season. There's no better way to check out both diver and kit.

Above is our newest member who joined us on a dive in Pembroke.

the diving

We've just come back from a weeks diving from a gulet in Fethiye. Clear water and exciting caves were the order of the diving. More details in Club magazine tab.

In September we wentto Pembroke enjoying unbelievable visibility of 10 metres plus.

the social

Tooting Bec Lido celebrated it's centenary , marking the event with an underwater mirror art installation. WBSAC helped with this. Details in hot of the press.

Drinking and eating are always the order of the day, and was demonstrated again at our AGM and Christmas dinner.

the training

We think basic training is best done in one of the many good schools now available so we don't offer it.  Our Instructors (yes, we've got 'em) focus on improving diving skills in action.  We think the "religious wars" between the various agencies are plain silly so welcome people trained by all reputable agencies who want to dive, improve their skills and enjoy it.  And if you want to learn to drive a RIB click the "Dive Programme" tab to see what's in store
